I have been using Google's Sidebar for a few weeks now integrated with Desktop Search 2. I love it, it is really convenient and very customizable. I was concerned that it might carry with it to much overhead, but that has not been the case.
It is a great way to get news, stock info, monitor email, monitor google talk, etc.
Google is taking over the world, we may as well embrace it!
